【摘要】:Thepracticedescribedclassifiessoilsfromanygeographiclocationintogroups(includinggroupindexes)basedontheresultsofprescribedlaboratoryteststodeterminetheparticle-sizecharacteristics,liquidlimit,andplasticityindex.Theassigningofagroupsymbolandgroupindexcanbeusedtoaidintheevaluationofthesignificantpropertiesofthesoilforhighwayandairfieldpurposes.Thevariousgroupingsofthisclassificationsystemcorrelateinageneralwaywiththeengineeringbehaviorofsoils.Also,inageneralway,theengineeringbehaviorofasoilvariesinverselywithitsgroupindex.Therefore,thispracticeprovidesausefulfirststepinanyfieldorlaboratoryinvestigationforgeotechnicalengineeringpurposes.1.1Thispracticecoversaprocedureforclassifyingmineralandorganomineralsoilsintosevengroupsbasedonlaboratorydeterminationofparticle-sizedistribution,liquidlimit,andplasticityindex.Itmaybeusedwhenapreciseengineeringclassificationisrequired,especiallyforhighwayconstructionpurposes.Evaluationofsoilswithineachgroupismadebymeansofagroupindex,whichisavaluecalculatedfromanempiricalformula.Note18212;Thegroupclassification,includingthegroupindex,shouldbeusefulindeterminingtherelativequalityofthesoilmaterialforuseinearthworkstructures,particularlyembankments,subgrades,subbases,andbases.However,forthedetaileddesignofimportantstructures,additionaldataconcerningstrengthorperformancecharacteristicsofthesoilunderfieldconditionswillusuallyberequired.1.2Thevaluesstatedininch-poundunitsaretoberegardedasstandard.ThevaluesgiveninparenthesesaremathematicalconversionstoSIunitsthatareprovidedforinformationonlyandarenotconsideredstandard.1.3Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.1.4Thispracticeoffersasetofinstructionsforperformingoneormorespecificoperations.Thispracticecannotreplaceeducationorexperienceandshouldbeusedinconjunctionwithprofessionaljudgment.Notallaspectsofthispracticemaybeapplicableinallcircumstances.Thispracticeisnotintendedtorepresentorreplacethestandardofcarebywhichtheadequacyofagivenprofessionalservicemustbejudged,norshouldthispracticebeappliedwithoutconsiderationofaproject''smanyuniqueaspects.Thewordx201C;Standardx201D;inthetitleofthisdocumentmeansonlythatthedocumenthasbeenapprovedthroughtheASTMconsensusprocess.
